TPU Thread Embroidery: Technology and Style for New Surfaces
By Flavio Marini
Industrial embroidery continues to evolve. One material attracting interest is TPU thread, made with thermoplastic polyurethane. TPU already appears in automotive components, footwear and technical clothing. In embroidery, it opens up new options for textured and functional-looking surfaces.

What is TPU thread?
TPU thread can be stitched in a manner similar to conventional embroidery thread. Its thermoplastic component responds to heat: after stitching, a heat press can change the surface appearance and feel. The effect depends on the particular thread, substrate and finishing process.
Possible finishes include:
- Customisable surfaces: Glossy, matt, soft-touch or technical laminated appearances.
- A raised, rubber-like effect for a contemporary textured finish.
- Durability options: The finished surface may offer improved resistance to abrasion and wear when the materials and process are suited to the application.
- Moisture-resistant designs: Useful in outdoor or damp settings when the complete product has been designed and tested for that use.
TPU thread can therefore contribute to both the appearance and performance of an embroidered surface.

Where can it be used?
- Fashion: Details on technical jackets, trousers and sportswear-inspired accessories.
- Automotive interiors: Decorative stitching on seats, door panels and other interior components, subject to the applicable product requirements.
- Footwear: Branding and textured details on uppers, tongues and heels.
- Leather goods and accessories: Logos and motifs on backpacks, bags and wallets.
- Interior textiles: Decorative effects on cushions, acoustic panels and indoor curtains.
