Riveted ABS Studs for Leather Goods and Clothing
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Riveted ABS studs combine a decorative plastic top with a fixing pin or rivet. Compared with a similar-sized solid metal element, an ABS top can keep the decoration lighter. The total weight, feel and hold still depend on the stud, its finish, the fixing and the base material. Marini Ricami 1986’s samples show ABS studs applied to leather, garments and accessories.

What is ABS?
ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a thermoplastic used for shaped, relatively rigid components. In a riveted stud, the visible ABS element and the metal fixing have different functions. The fixing method must suit the thickness and structure of the garment, leather or accessory. A sample can establish how the stud looks and whether it remains secure under the intended use.
- ABS rivet studs in spherical and half-spherical shapes.
- Half-sphere ABS studs with metallic and painted finishes.
- Matte black and glossy gold spherical ABS rivet studs.
- Gold cone-shaped ABS studs and black pearl-effect round studs.
Shapes and finishes
The original collection listed spherical and half-spherical studs, rounded dome or onion shapes, pointed and truncated cones, pyramids with different bases, stars, pearl-like forms and custom shapes. Samples show glossy, matte, painted and metallic-effect finishes, including gold, silver, bronze, gunmetal and bright colours. Availability and the composition of a finish should be confirmed for a new order.
- Conical ABS studs in bright blue and metallic finishes.
- Half-sphere and cone ABS studs in glossy, matte and metallic finishes.
- ABS studs applied to leather with glossy, matte and metallic effects.
- Several ABS stud finishes applied to leather for bags and footwear.
Technical considerations
Riveted ABS studs offer an alternative to prong-set or heat-applied decorations. The pin may be made from different metals, so an ABS top by itself does not establish nickel content, skin compatibility, corrosion resistance or washability. Those properties require the supplier’s current specification and testing on the complete assembled product. Abrasion, colour fastness and attachment strength should also be checked against the intended use.
- Gold half-sphere and glossy black cone ABS rivet studs.
- Small spherical ABS studs in pearl, light-blue and blue finishes.
- ABS stud samples in oval, spherical and conical shapes.
Applications and base materials
The samples include applications on genuine leather for footwear, bags and other leather goods, as well as denim, jeans, cotton, jersey, tulle, organza, silk, satin, nylon, polyester, imitation leather, felt and coat fabrics. Thin or delicate substrates may need reinforcement or a different fixing. For more decorative options, see our ABS and acrylic stud embroidery examples.
