Perforation, Stitching and Embroidery for Fashion and Interiors
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Geometric perforation, quilting and embroidery can give leather and textile surfaces a distinctive finish. These techniques are relevant to fashion, interiors, automotive, yachting and aviation concepts. Each field has its own material, wear, fire and safety requirements, which must be assessed for the finished component.

Perforating leather and synthetic leather
Perforation creates small openings arranged as a repeat or a custom motif. On upholstery and seating surfaces, pattern and spacing influence the look and feel of the material. Any effect on ventilation or comfort depends on the complete seat construction, including backing and padding.

Hole sizes listed in the Italian article
Round holes: 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 mm in diameter.
Square and diamond holes: 1.5 × 1.5 mm.
Triangular holes: a punch with a 1.7 mm side is described.
A separate sentence in the Italian article gives a 0.2 mm minimum that conflicts with its detailed size list. We have therefore kept the listed dimensions here and recommend confirming current tools, tolerances and material compatibility when specifying an order. Custom cuts and shapes can be reviewed on a sample.

Embroidery and quilting on leather and textiles
Decorative stitching, padded quilting and embroidered logos can be combined with perforation. Thick thread, synthetic leather and padded fabric each call for a different needle, tension and support. The desired pattern should be tested on the actual stack of materials to review edge quality, flexibility and durability.

Embroidery and perforation can be planned together so that the stitch path and openings complement the same design. The production method should also account for how the cut edges and backing will be finished.

Application size
The Italian article describes work on areas larger than one metre using multi-head embroidery and perforation equipment. Feasible dimensions depend on the current machine set-up, handling of the material and the motif; please confirm the usable area for a new project.
