Monochrome Embroidery: Texture, Contrast and Detail
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Monochrome embroidery uses a single thread colour to build detail against a contrasting fabric. Historic traditions include English blackwork and Italian Assisi embroidery. A limited palette puts the emphasis on stitch, pattern and texture.

The art of working in one colour
Monochrome does not mean simple. With one colour, the quality of each stitch becomes more visible. Changes in density and direction can create shading, volume and intricate details. Tufted stitches, raised embroidery and industrial embroidered lace can also be interpreted in a single-colour design.
Historic examples include:
- English blackwork, with geometric, floral and other motifs built from counted or free stitches;
- Silk and hair embroidery, in which fine lines could evoke an engraving;
- Assisi embroidery, where the contrast between stitched areas and the ground defines a shape.

A choice for fashion and design
Monochrome embroidery can be subtle or dramatic depending on the fabric, thread and stitch structure. It gives designers a way to create a coherent visual identity while exploring texture and relief.
