Fringed Embroidery: The Beauty of an Imperfect Detail
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Among the most expressive techniques in our workshop, fringed embroidery brings texture and movement together.
It begins with precise control of stitch length, followed by manual or mechanical fraying of the yarn. This turns the embroidery into a light, lively and dynamic surface.
Unlike conventional embroidery with crisp, defined edges, fringed embroidery plays with the contrast between order and disorder, between the structure of a stitch and the freedom of loose fibres.
The result resembles fabric moving in the wind: tufts and fibres rise from the textile, creating natural volume and an intentionally raw yet refined look.
Technology and texture
The technique combines digital programming with craft finishing.
Our machines control the embroidered area precisely, while the choice of yarn—viscose, cotton, wool blends or soft synthetics—defines the finished surface’s visual and tactile character.

Applications
Fringed embroidery can be used in:
- Fashion and accessories, for decorative edges, patches and textured appliqués
- Luxury leather goods, for embroidered details on leather or technical fabrics
- Interior design, for decorative elements, panels and coverings with strong tactile appeal

The value of imperfection
Every frayed edge is unique: the threads open in spontaneous, unpredictable ways, making each embroidery slightly different.
That individuality becomes a signature detail, bringing warmth and character even to minimalist surfaces.
Fringed embroidery is a form of industrial craftsmanship, combining the freedom of hand finishing with the repeatability and precision of digital embroidery.
