Custom Embroidered Patches: Design and Attachment
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Custom embroidered patches can add a name, logo or decorative motif to workwear, sports clothing and accessories. In the original 2017 article, Marini Ricami described a dedicated service called Patch Lab for this kind of request. The examples below explain the design and attachment options; current service details should be confirmed when requesting a quotation.

- Backpacks, caps and fashion accessories
Designing a custom patch
The starting point can be a finished logo or a sketch. The design is prepared for embroidery so the stitch layout, colours and dimensions can be assessed before sampling. Thread may have a glossy or matte finish, while a base such as felt or satin gives the patch its character. A first physical sample helps confirm the result on the intended garment or accessory.
How can a patch be attached?
Heat-bonded backing: an adhesive layer can bond the patch to a suitable textile under controlled heat and pressure. The fabric, care requirements and patch construction must be checked first; a domestic iron is not a reliable method for every material.
Sew-on patch: stitching around the patch edge provides a mechanical attachment. Thread can blend with the patch or become a visible detail.
Hook-and-loop fastening: one part is attached to the patch and the matching part to the garment. This can make a badge removable or interchangeable, which is useful for uniforms and equipment.
Materials and care
Polyester threads and bases are often chosen for colour and wear performance. Actual durability depends on the complete patch, attachment, garment and washing conditions. The unconditional lifetime and washing guarantees stated in the original 2017 text should not be assumed for a new order; care instructions and performance can be agreed for the specified product.
