Carpet Stitch Embroidery and Tufting Effects
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Carpet stitch embroidery, also described as a velvet or tufting effect, creates a raised surface with a soft, carpet-like appearance. The effect can be made by hand or with specialised embroidery equipment. Industrial production offers a way to repeat the design across a series, while the final texture depends on the yarn, base and finishing.

Marini Ricami develops carpet stitch effects with embroidery machines. Different yarn colours can be combined within a motif, making the technique useful for multicolour designs. A sample helps establish the right pile height, outline and feel for the finished product.
How Carpet Stitch Embroidery Is Made
The embroidery machine first builds a dense stitched area on the base fabric. The surface is then cut or sheared to create a more even, soft pile. This finishing step gives the embroidery its characteristic carpet or velvet-like look. The process has similarities to the trimming used for some carpets, although the construction and equipment differ.

Applications
The raised effect can be applied directly to a garment or developed as a patch or separate accessory. It can also be considered for leather goods and footwear. When working on genuine leather or another sensitive base, the design should be sampled to check how the material responds to stitching and finishing.
Possible Base Materials
The Italian article lists leather and leather alternatives, satin, silk, denim, viscose fabric, sweatshirt fabric and felt among the possible bases. The suitability of each material depends on its thickness, stability and intended use.

Yarn Options
Yarns mentioned for this effect include recycled PET, glossy or matte polyester, glossy or matte viscose, metallic Lurex, ceramic-effect yarns, cotton, wool and other natural fibres. Each option changes the surface and handling, so the yarn should be chosen alongside the base fabric and design.
