Back-Waistband Labels: Leather, Imitation Leather, Alcantara and Jacron
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Back-waistband labels—the patches on the back of jeans, as well as labels applied to bags and accessories—are an iconic detail that can communicate a brand’s identity and value.
As fashion and sustainability increasingly meet, material choice matters: leather, imitation leather, Alcantara® and Jacron each offer distinct qualities of appearance, performance and perception.
Leather
Characteristics
A natural material associated with craft, quality and durability, leather has long been linked to luxury and fine leather goods. It may be smooth or grained, dyed in many colours and customised with embossing, printing or embroidery.
Applications
Suitable for premium jeans, leather bags, belts and footwear. Leather labels can become a recognisable brand signature and an integral part of the design.
Embroidery considerations
Leather needs stable support and suitable needles to avoid tears or unwanted marks. Our Tajima machines provide precise stitch control even on thicker materials.
Advantages
An authentic appearance, high perceived value and excellent durability.

Imitation leather
Characteristics
A synthetic or blended material that reproduces the look of genuine leather, with greater consistency and a wider choice of colours and textures.
Applications
Well suited to back-waistband labels for fashion garments and collections seeking a consistent aesthetic at a balanced cost.
Embroidery considerations
It is generally easier to process than genuine leather, but should be selected with regard to the flexibility and durability of its surface layer.
Advantages
Lower costs, colour stability and a strong balance of appearance and practicality.
Alcantara®
Characteristics
A high-quality microfibre used in fashion, automotive, yachting and interior design. Its soft, velvety texture has an elegant, refined feel, and the material is resistant to washing.
Applications
Back-waistband labels for premium garments, exclusive capsules and collections where a refined tactile feel is central to the design.
Embroidery considerations
The fabric needs careful stabilisation to avoid tension during embroidery. The finished result can be exceptionally clean and visually striking.
Advantages
A luxurious touch, resistance to wear and a good fit with premium sectors.

Jacron
Characteristics
Jacron is an innovative material based on cellulose and wood fibres and is presented as an alternative to leather. It is water-resistant, washable, durable and animal-free.
Made using natural cellulose, water and natural latex, it is used by various brands for labels, tags and accessories. It has a pleasantly textured surface and comes in a range of thicknesses, colours and finishes.
Applications
Suitable for collections and brands seeking to communicate an environmentally conscious approach without sacrificing visual quality.
Embroidery considerations
Stabilisation should be tested at the sampling stage. The material lends itself to embroidery, printing and laser engraving.
Advantages
Light weight, wash resistance, strong graphic results and the sustainability attributes described above.
