ABS and Acrylic Studs in Fashion Embroidery
- Posted by Flavio Marini
Studs can turn a garment, handbag or shoe component into a more tactile surface. Marini Ricami 1986 develops decorative layouts that combine machine-controlled placement with the selected material, stud shape and finish. ABS and acrylic elements offer different visual effects; the attachment method must suit the fabric or leather and the expected use of the finished item.
Riveted ABS studs
ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a thermoplastic used in many rigid moulded components. The Italian article presents riveted ABS studs in half-sphere, round, oval and conical shapes. They can be arranged as borders, all-over patterns or graphic motifs. Their weight, finish and attachment are assessed against the material and the design rather than assumed from the polymer alone.
- Gold half-sphere and glossy black cone ABS rivet studs.
- Small spherical ABS studs in pearl, light-blue and blue finishes.
- ABS stud samples in oval, spherical and conical shapes.
A riveted element has a visible decorative head and a fixing component on the reverse. Other attachment options may be possible depending on the selected stud. We check the reverse, hand feel and holding performance on a sample before confirming a production specification for clothing, footwear or leather goods.
Acrylic finishes and material choice
Acrylic studs can provide a bright, glass-like look in a different range of colours and shapes. Glossy, matt, painted and metallic effects can also be explored with ABS samples. The look of a sample does not establish its fibre or recycled content: if a project calls for recycled or GRS-certified material, the relevant supplier and transaction documents must be checked for that exact component and supply chain. Textile Exchange describes the GRS certification and claim requirements.

Crystal effects and historical samples
The original article also shows crystal embellishments and mentions Swarovski materials. The gallery below reproduces historical examples; it does not establish that a particular brand, crystal or application process is currently available for every order. We confirm sourcing, authenticity documentation and the suitable fixing technique when specifying a new project.

Develop a studded design
Stud size, distribution and surface finish can be adjusted to a brand’s design. To evaluate a sample, share the base material, desired motif, colour and intended use. Contact Marini Ricami 1986 to discuss development and a quotation.
