3D Embroidery: Depth and Structure in Textile Design

  • Posted by Flavio Marini

In fashion and interior design, 3D embroidery adds depth and structure to a textile surface. Instead of lying flat, stitches and materials build volume, bringing movement to garments and accessories.

What is 3D embroidery?

Three-dimensional embroidery can combine layers of fabric, stitching and specialised materials to create raised elements. In couture and leather goods, it lends itself to details such as sculptural flowers, layered appliqués and textured motifs.

3D flowers: a creative interpretation

One application is a flower made from layers of fabric. A firm base supports the embroidery, while a light material such as organza or silk forms the petals. The petal shapes are designed, embroidered, cut and assembled to create depth. Beads, sequins and metallic threads can add further detail.

Experimenting with unusual materials

Designers can explore many materials to change the look and feel of raised embroidery:

  • Cut brush bristles for natural-looking textures;
  • 3D-printed beads for distinctive geometric shapes;
  • Recycled or innovative materials chosen to suit the design and production requirements.

These combinations expand the range of textures available for a collection.
